Purple horned cat with third eye on a calf

Japanese · Calf · Colour · Photo

A purple cat with curled horns, a third eye on its forehead, teal eyes and feathered wings sits within peach and pink swirling cloud shapes. Fine linework defines the fur and the outlines, with soft shading and smooth colour fills in lilac, violet and teal. The design fills most of the frame on a calf, with a faint pale outline of another motif visible at the bottom left.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The mule sits down in the snow at the top of the Hollin Pass and will not be moved, so you sit down beside it, because there is nothing else to do with a stubborn animal at dusk. The cloud comes up the far side like milk poured the wrong way, peach-edged where the last light catches it, and out of it steps a cat the colour of a bruised plum.

It is bigger than any cat has a right to be. Two horns curl from its brow like a ram's, and a third eye sits between them, open and teal, the same colour as the two below it. Feathered wings fold along its back, ribbed and pale at the tips. It sits on the rock beside you and looks at the mule, then at you, and you understand that the mule has been waiting for permission.

"Your uncle owed my mother a crossing," it says, though you have no uncle who ever climbed this way. The cat yawns. Its voice is a bell rung under water. "Take the left fork down, not the right. The right fork keeps what it catches."

You say you have no money. It tells you the cloud will be the payment: you must carry a piece of its mist down the mountain and let it go where the valley is dry. So you gather a fistful of grey wool from the air and tuck it into your coat, and it stays cold all the way to the village, and when you open your hand at the river there is nothing there but the smell of rain on hot stone, and the cat's laugh going up and up the pass behind you.
