Hedgehog with pink blossoms on thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A cartoon-like hedgehog holds a stem with a pink blossom and drifting petals, while a cluster of pink flowers and green leaves forms a rounded backdrop behind it. The hedgehog is shaded in soft greys and browns with dark outlines, and the flowers and leaves use bold colour with black outlining. The tattoo is shown close up on a pale thigh against a patterned fabric in the top right corner.

Ida lived beneath the roots of the old crab apple by the churchyard wall, and every April she kept the wild pink blossom along the top of that wall in good order. Each year the wind took the petals before anyone thought to look at them. This year the frost had blackened the chapel lilies, and Mrs Pell had nothing to put on the altar for her son's wedding on Saturday, only a jug of bare twigs and a sigh.
Ida went up the wall at first light, choosing the one bloom on the whole run that had kept its colour. She bit through the stem where it met the bough, took it in both paws and set off along the top of the stones. The petals came loose as she went, a few here, a few on the lane, and she did not stop to gather them. The carter, who saw her pass the mill, swore she was humming.
The altar was dressed by eight. The blossom stood alone in the jug, and Mrs Pell wept into her gloves before the first hymn. Ida was already back under the crab apple, curled tight, her work done. Nobody thought to thank her, which suited her well enough, since the petals she had dropped all along the wall were turning up for days after, pressed flat in the hymn books and in the pockets of every child who ran to see the bride.
