Cat with peacock feathers on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a brown tabby cat with green eyes, wearing a headpiece of teal peacock feathers with orange eye spots and a gold-framed red gem. Below it sit a large red heart-shaped gem, red flowers with green buds and green leaves, all outlined in bold black lines with solid colour and soft shading. The image is three photographs of the same tattoo from slightly different angles, placed side by side.

Dear Marjorie, the cat has taken to wearing the peacock feathers again, so you needn't worry about the border this year. I found her at dawn under the potting bench, sitting upright as a duchess, a crown of teal plumes pinned to her head with a gold ring and two little red stones. Mr Pruett next door swears the feathers came from his aviary, but he has been short one bird since March and I suspect he is simply too proud to admit it.

The garden has never been so bright. The red poppies came up in a fury after the rain, and the heart-shaped ruby that Father buried under the rhubarb in 1961 finally surfaced by the path, glinting like a boiled sweet. The cat sat beside it all morning, paws tucked neatly, watching the bees go in and out of the flowers as though she were counting them for the Queen.

Last Tuesday she dragged a seed head up the back steps and laid it at my feet. It was green and round as a fist, and when I cracked it open the seeds rattled like coins. I understood then what she wanted. She had been keeping the poppies from going to waste, and I had been too busy with the mower to notice.

So I have left the bud on the sill for her. She has not touched it, but she sleeps beside it now, with the feathers folded over her ears. Come up at the weekend and see for yourself. Bring the good secateurs, and do not let Pruett near the peacocks.
