The roses on the cabin roof have gone to seed again, so I have been painting over the same five petals since Tuesday. Dad said the blue and ochre would hold through the locks at Hanwell, and they have, though the paint got into everything: the cat, the kettle, my good cardigan. The lock-keeper at Bull's Bridge laughed when he saw my hands and asked whether I'd been drawing on myself.

Here is the news. The boat is still called Marigold Rose, though Dad wants to change it to something he says sounds more serious. I told him the flowers came with the name and we don't argue with a name already painted on both sides of the hull. Mrs Abernethy from the next moorings brought round a tin of dotted sweets and a pair of brass spectacles she found in the reeds. She says they belonged to a lock-keeper's wife who sketched paisley on the gates before the war, and she wants them given to someone who'll look properly.

I've kept the spectacles on the sill. When the sun comes through the window in the mornings, the light sits in the little circles on the cabin wall, the stripes on the petals go gold, and I think of you counting the dots on the bridge rail the way we used to.
