Floral sleeve tattoo on an arm
Dotwork · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
Two photographs show a full arm sleeve of stylised flowers and swirling foliage. Fine black linework outlines the petals and leaves, with dense dotwork filling the gaps between them. Orange, yellow, red and teal ink sit against the black and grey detail, and the design wraps around the arm from the upper arm down to the forearm.

The snow shut the pass at four o'clock, and by nine the only guest still up in the Fell Inn was a woman called Ines Harrow, who had taken the table nearest the stove and was drawing on the back of the breakfast menu. I brought her a second pot of tea and she didn't look up. She worked a petal, then a curl of leaf, then a field of dots so fine I had to lean close to believe a hand had made them.

'What's it for?' I asked, because the bar was empty and I had nothing else to do with mine. 'The wallpaper in the Blue Room,' she said. 'Part of it is the pattern from my nan's kitchen. The rest is what I think a kitchen should have been.' She turned the page round. Orange petals hung off a black stem, and beside them a ring of little eyes, each dot sitting inside another dot.
The wind got into the chimney and the fire sulked. She talked about her grandmother, who ironed by the window so the light would catch the cloth, and about the patience it takes to fill a space without leaving a gap. Around midnight she tore the page out, folded it into quarters and pushed it across the table. The margin said, in small capitals, KEEP THE SWIRLS GOING PAST THE EDGE.
The ploughs came through before dawn and she was gone before the kettle boiled. The Blue Room stayed bare, as far as I know. But the menu sits on the shelf above my till, and each time I count change my eye follows a curl of orange until it runs off the paper and into the grain of the wood.
