Colourful forearm sleeve with scattered specks
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A forearm and hand are shown from the side against a plain grey background. The forearm is covered in a large, colourful tattoo sleeve with red, teal, yellow and green areas and loose linework. Many small dark specks sit over the skin and the tattoo, which obscure parts of the design.

You have the ovens lit by four, and the window still shows your own reflection with flour on one cheek. Mrs Okafor's order is chalked on the slate: forty poppy seed rolls for the church fete. That means an hour of pressing seeds into the tops with the flat of your palm, the way your aunt taught you in a kitchen that smelled of wet coats and cinnamon.

The seeds get everywhere. They work into the creases of your knuckles and the cuff of your jumper, and they settle on the old painted peel that hangs by the door, where a trade school boy once drew a meadow in teal, red and yellow lines. Years of scrubbing have worn the colours soft at the edges. You pick a seed off a green stripe and it sticks to your thumb like a small dark full stop.
The mill van is late. You stand at the back door with your hands white to the wrist and listen to the road, and it occurs to you that you have been working by feel for an hour and haven't once checked the trays. When you finally do, every roll is dusted with seed in the same loose scatter, as if someone had walked a field and let the wind do the rest.
The sun comes up behind the flats across the road and lays a line of gold along the counter. You carry the first tray out into it. The rolls look like a meadow seen from a train window, dark specks thrown over bright ground, and you decide that nobody who buys one at the fete will ever think to count them.
