Jellyfish tattoo on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A jellyfish with a domed bell and long, trailing tentacles is tattooed on the forearm, running from the wrist towards the elbow. The ink uses soft, blended shading in teal and blue, with darker lines defining the bell and tentacles and a faint, diffuse wash fading out at the lower edge. The hand is raised against a plain white background, which keeps the focus on the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The jellies came in on the third morning of the slack tide, bells the size of dinner plates drifting against the harbour wall as though someone had spilt milk on the water. Mrs Pargeter at the chandlery swore they were bad luck. Her husband swore she had said the same about the new breakwater, and the breakwater was still standing, so nobody paid her much mind.

Iris Lowe, who kept the tide tables and a back room full of jars, sent me down with a bucket and a landing net and told me not to touch the threads. They hung below the bells like wet silk left out to dry, and when the sun caught them they went the colour of a kingfisher's back. I got one into the net on my third try. It pulsed in the bottom of the bucket, slow as someone breathing in their sleep, and Iris clicked her tongue at my clumsiness but took the bucket anyway.

We moved it into a carboy of seawater on the windowsill, where the light came through the glass and made the bell look lit from inside. Iris sat with her chin on her hands and watched it all afternoon. By teatime the blue had gone thin at the edges and the threads had stopped moving. She said it was only tired, and that they were made mostly of water and didn't mind being moved so long as they got to go home.

I carried the carboy down to the wall before the lamps were lit. The bell lay a moment on the surface, then slid under, and the colour went out of it like a wash lifting off wet paper, until there was only green water and the lamp reflected in it.
