Running wolves fading into dotwork on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Four wolves run in a line across the inner forearm, moving from left to right. The leftmost wolf is filled with green, orange and blue watercolour washes, while the middle wolves are outlined in fine black line with pale unshaded bodies. The rightmost wolf breaks apart into stippled dots in black and multicoloured speckles, and the composition reads as motion trailing off the arm.

The marsh had been drained once, badly, and the water had never agreed to leave. Mabel Quarrie walked the sea wall each dusk with a tin of paint on her hip, touching up the names on the herring boats, and that was where the wolves found her, four of them strung out along the wet grass like a sentence nobody had finished.

The first wolf was the only one with any colour left in him. Green ran down his flank where the reeds caught the light, orange pooled at his shoulder like the last of the sun, and a thread of blue trailed from his muzzle. The second and third were plain, ink-edged and unpainted, running as if the sea were at their heels. The fourth was already coming apart, her legs breaking into a spray of specks that the wind lifted and dropped over the wall.
Mabel had seen wolves in the county only once before, when she was a girl and her father kept a dog that looked like one. She set down the tin and counted them. Three, four. The fourth turned her head and looked at Mabel with an eye that had nearly gone to dust, and she understood that it was not asking to be saved. It wanted someone to keep the pace.
So she ran. Her boots slid on the saltgrass and her paint slopped against her hip, and for a quarter of a mile she was the fifth in the line, green on her hands, until the pack bent north towards the lighthouse and the last of the speckles lifted off the wall like seed heads. When she looked back the marsh was bare and silver. Only the fourth wolf's tracks remained, filling slowly with rain, each one holding a single bright dot of colour that nothing would wash away.
