A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The giraffe came to the kitchen garden at Hollin Mere the winter the travelling fair pulled out and left him behind, folded into a cart with a broken axle. Nell Abbot, who was nine and not afraid of anything with hooves, found him in the frost. His neck had been bent to fit the cart, and it had set that way, curling back toward his own hind legs like a fern before it opens.

Her father said a thing that shape would never stand up straight again. Nell did not argue. She carried him water in the cracked bucket every morning and told him about the apple trees, the wall, the rooks quarrelling over the church spire. The spots on his flanks were the colour of windfalls, pink where the sun reached them, orange at the edges, and blue-green where the ivy shadow fell. By midsummer he was lifting his head an inch a week.

On the first day of August a wind came over the wall from the moor and rattled the glasshouse panes. The giraffe stretched. His neck came unbent in one long slow pull, and his small horned head rose above the hedge, above the chimney, above the tower, and he looked out at a country he had only heard described.

Nell watched from the path with the bucket in her hand. He looked down at her, and she understood he had not come for the view. He wanted her to climb on. She set the bucket down, took hold of a spot on his shoulder as if it were a rung, and found the ground was already a long way off. Behind them the gardener's cart stayed where it was, its axle mended by nobody at all.
