Red fine-line rosebud on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Colour · Photo
A bare foot and ankle show a single red fine-line tattoo of a closed rosebud with a long stem that curls up at the top and trails down toward the heel. The linework is thin and even, with small shaded areas on the bud and a couple of tiny leaf shapes near its base. The plain purple fabric behind the foot gives the red ink strong contrast.

The circus had been dying for three winters when the ringmaster's daughter, Ilse, started watering a dead rosebush behind the wagons. Nobody thought much of it. The big top had holes in its canvas, the elephant had gone to a farm in Lincolnshire, and the horses had been sold for glue to pay the coal bills in the depot town.

But the bush did not die. By March it had put out one long green shoot that curled up toward the wagon step like a question, and at its tip a bud closed tight as a fist. Ilse's father, Tobias Rook, who had walked the wire for forty years before his knees gave out, came to look at it with his hands in his coat pockets. He said a bud closed like that was waiting for someone to tell it the weather was safe.
So Ilse went to every town on the circuit with a jar of cuttings and a handwritten notice. Nobody came to the ring. But a woman at a lock-keeper's cottage near Stafford took one stem, and a boy in Wolverhampton took another, and the stems trailed away from the road like thread off a spool.
When the circus finally packed up for good, the last bloom was still shut. Ilse rolled the bush in sacking and set it on the tailboard of the lorry. At the next town a girl with flour on her hands peeled back the sacking, looked at the bud and said, "It's not finished yet." That was how the show began again, with the tent pegs in the mud and the rope stretched tight between two poplars.
