Pink flamingo on an ankle
Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A pink flamingo stands on one leg, with its head turned and a small black beak and eye. The body is filled with solid pink shading, while the neck and legs are drawn in simple black linework. The design is small and sits on the ankle against plain, lightly lit skin.

Nobody in Hollin Bay could say how the flamingo came to be standing in the shallows of the boating lake, but Mrs Pargeter swore it had walked there from her garden on Tuesday, one leg folded up like a deckchair, the other stuck out at its angle as if it were waiting for a bus. The council sent a man in a yellow jacket to shoo it. It stood still, looked at him sideways with its small black eye, and did not move until he had given up and gone for his tea.

By Thursday the whole front had an opinion. The chip shop lad said it was a fugitive from a travelling circus. The vicar said it was a sign, though he would not say of what. Bernie at the amusements thought someone was having a laugh and was waiting to see who would own up, so he kept a sharp eye on the children who came down each morning with bread. The flamingo ate the bread, ignored the children, and went on standing on one leg as though the other had something important to finish.
On Saturday the wind came in off the sea so hard that the pier closed. Bernie found the flamingo at dusk, tucked into the lee of the bandstand with its neck curled round itself, and he sat down on the wet step beside it with his flask. He told it, out loud and feeling foolish, that he had not once in forty years stood still long enough to see anything properly. The flamingo said nothing. In the morning it was gone, and there were two neat prints in the sand where it had stepped away on the one leg it had decided to use.
