Colourful phoenix tattoo on the lower leg

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

A large phoenix rises through the centre of the design, with outstretched red, orange and yellow wings and a long trailing tail in pink and teal. Bold dark outlines define the bird and its swirling flame and cloud shapes, while soft grey shading gives depth behind the wings and lower tail. Vivid colour dominates the composition, which wraps diagonally down the calf toward the ankle.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wick had gone soft in the lantern room and the storm was driving the ships towards Skerry Nab, so I was up the stairs at two in the morning with a tin of paraffin and my father's spectacles when the sky split open above the gallery and something came down through the rain, burning.

It was a bird, or it had the shape of one, as long as my arm from beak to trailing tail, its wings a hot red and yellow that threw light across the wet glass. It perched on the iron rail and did not flinch when the wind tried to take it. Its tail spilled over the edge, pink then teal, and where the feathers touched the spray they hissed and turned to cloud. I should have been frightened. Instead I opened the tin and set to work on the wick, because a light is a light whatever sort of creature is keeping it.

The bird watched me work. When the flame caught, it lifted its head and gave a cry like a gull with a grudge, then folded its wings and dropped straight into the sea below the rock. I ran down the stairs with my heart in my throat, expecting to find nothing but foam. There was a glow under the swell instead, rising, and a streak of colour where the water broke into curls like smoke.

Morning brought the fishing boats in safe. The keeper at the next station swore he saw a fire climb out of the bay at dawn, and I told him he needed sleep. Still, every night since, I leave a little oil in the lamp for a guest, and on grey mornings a trail of rose and turquoise lies along the tideline, as if something has been practising its way home.
