Colour tattoo of a flickering orange and red flame with purple splatter and a black geometric lattice base, on the upper leg.

Flame with black geometric base on a leg

Geometric · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A stylised flame rises from a black geometric lattice base, with the flame shaded in orange, red and yellow. Purple and pink wash and black ink splatter spread behind the flame, giving a painterly, watercolour-like effect. The design is centred on the outer thigh, and the black linework and flame are crisp against the skin.

You are the only one left in Harrowmere who remembers how the lattice was set. Your grandmother's hands knew to seat the black iron star over the brazier so the draught climbed through its points and bent the flame into a tongue. The keepers called it the Ninefold Star, though when you found it under the chapel stair it had only six arms left, furred with rust and dust.

Nobody in the city wants the fire back. The guild of bell-founders says it blackens their wall-hangings, and the magistrate has taken to sending clerks with lists. But on the third night of the frost you carry the lattice up the hill anyway, a coal tin in one hand and a rag of tallow in the other. The wind off the Sallow Marsh flings spatters of ink-dark needle from the pines, so the whole hilltop looks like a page someone has flicked a brush across in anger.

The first match fails. The second catches only the rag. You stop coaxing and simply wait, the way your grandmother waited, until the iron has warmed enough to hold heat and the air inside the star begins to shiver. Then a single orange tongue lifts, thin and uncertain, and climbs higher than you expected, pinking at its edges where the violet dusk catches it.

Below you the lamps of Harrowmere go out one by one as the clerks finish their lists. Up here the flame keeps rising, and you let it, because a fire that waits for permission has already gone out. By morning the iron will be cold again, and someone will have to climb up and light it a second time.
