Colourful rooster on the thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A large rooster stands in profile with a raised blue and green tail and a red comb and wattle. Bold outlines and feather detailing define the orange, yellow, red and blue plumage, with yellow legs and talons. The bird is centred on a pale background, and the skin texture shows around its edges.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cockerel on the roof of Pell's Boarding House had been turning in the wind for longer than anyone in Saltcombe could say, and every morning it faced the bay and told the lodgers what sort of day to expect. Its tail was blue and green, the colour of the water under the cliff, and its comb was as red as the lifeboat house door. Folk said it could not be fooled, and that was why nobody ever tried.

Then in August the wind dropped and the cockerel stuck. It pointed east, toward the church, and would not budge for three days. Mr Wray, who came every summer to mend clocks for nothing and eat the pudding, said the bearing had rusted and offered to climb up with a spanner. Ada Pell, who was eleven and had kept the hens since she could walk, told him the bird was only waiting. Waiting for what, he asked. She didn't know, and said so.

On the fourth night the fishing boats did not come home by dark. Ada took the lantern up the ladder to the leads and found the cockerel had turned at last, not east but south, to the mouth of the harbour where the light was. She shouted down until her gran came up, and together they watched the lamps of the Heron and the Kittiwake come round the point, one behind the other, low in the water and whole.

Mr Wray never did mend the bird. He said it had been right all along, and paid for his pudding that week in full.
