Red phoenix tattoo on an upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large phoenix with outstretched wings and a head in profile dominates the design, with feathers shading from deep red to bright orange and yellow. Bold outlines and smooth blended shading give the bird volume, while teal and dark blue tones sit behind the wings. Swirling red flames curl beneath the bird and frame a small grey skull-like motif at the bottom of the composition.

The smoke reached the scriptorium before the bell did, sliding under the west door as if it had waited all night for an invitation. I had the Easter gradual open on the desk, the initial P half-finished, and I did not stop to close it. I tucked the book inside my habit and ran, the wet pages pressing cold against my ribs.

Brother Anselm had wanted a phoenix for the Easter page, rising above the Alleluia, and I had given him wings thrown wide and flames curling beneath like a ribbon. Brother Hild had insisted on the small grey skull in the lower corner. She had painted the borders for forty years and died in January with her spectacles still on, and she said a page about rising should remember what it rose from.

The kitchen roof fell in while we watched, a long sigh of sparks going up over the orchard. Nobody was hurt. The abbot stood at the gate with his hood pulled back, looking older than his years. The gradual's edges were scorched where the heat had reached through the leather, but the feathers in the margin were dry and bright. The flames had not touched the bird.

When chapter was over I opened the book on the lectern and found the ink had held: red, orange, a band of yellow like first light over the fells. Beneath the skull I wrote Hild's name in small capitals, the way she taught me, and then, because nobody would see it but God and the mice, I drew one curl of flame around it to the foot of the page.
