A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Teodora had been pressing sugar skulls since before the church bell was mended, and the November wind always found the gap under the bakery door. Her thumbs knew the moulds better than her head did. Each one was packed, levelled and tipped onto the board, then the eye sockets were scooped with the back of a spoon and the teeth cut in with a cocktail stick dipped in egg white. Old Ines from the bottom of the lane came in with her husband's photograph creased in her coat pocket. He had laughed with his whole face, she said, so the skull should look as if it had been to the dance. Teodora piped the hair in tall blue and black waves that rolled like the sea off the point, swirled pale blue shadow into the cheeks, and set three red hearts along the top where a crown would sit. Marigolds went at the temples with green leaves tucked beneath them, and a pale green cross went at the chin, because Ines always carried a cross to the grave on the first morning.

On the second night a boy came in from the ridge path, soaked through, and asked why the lips were painted so red. Teodora told him a skull with red lips still had something to say. He watched her dust the teeth with a fine brush of black, then he went out without buying anything.

At dawn Ines came back, not for the skull but to thank her. The boy from the ridge had sat with her in the square at midnight and told her the same joke her husband used to tell, the one with the goat and the bishop. Teodora looked at the skull on the tray, its red mouth set in a grin, as if it had only just stopped laughing.
