Come along Pond script on a foot
Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a bare foot with red toenail polish, showing black script lettering that appears to read Come along Pond. The thin, even linework runs diagonally from the top of the foot towards the ankle, with no shading or colour. A laptop is partly visible in the upper left against a dark blue background.

The ice had come down the cut overnight like a lid, and Dora Hale stood at the bottom gate of Lock Nineteen with her breath hanging in front of her, calling the dog. Pond did not come. He stood on the frozen edge with one forepaw lifted, the way he always stood when the water held something he wanted to look at properly.

Her brother had named him for the pond at the end of their lane, the year they both were small enough to be sent there with a bucket. Dad had said it was a daft name for a working dog. Dad had also said the lock would be shut by March, and Dora had told him exactly where he could put his March. Now the boards along the towpath were furred white and the lock-keeper's hut smelt of paraffin and wet wool.
She crept out along the bank with the boathook. Under the ice, a dull gleam turned slowly in the green. It was Dad's brass bell, the one that had rung from the stern of the *Mabel* at every lock for forty years, lost the week he sold the boat. Pond had been sitting above it since Tuesday, patient as a tollkeeper. Dora rapped the ice with the hook until it cracked, then fished the bell out, streaming and heavy, and the sound it gave was thin and clear across the frozen cut.
Pond gave one sharp bark and came trotting along the towpath to her side, tail low and pleased with himself. "Come along, Pond," she said, and hung the bell from her wrist, and they walked up the lane together while the fog closed over the place where the water had been.
