Black handwritten Greek script tattoo running across the top of a bare foot, photographed on purple bedding with green leaf print.

Greek script tattoo on a foot

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot and ankle show a line of Greek lettering in black ink, written in a loose, handwritten style that runs diagonally from the ankle towards the toes. The linework is fine and even with solid black strokes and no visible shading. The skin is light and the purple and green bedding fills the background, with the tattoo as the clear focus of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The jar had a crack in its shoulder that the potter, Kostas, swore would hold. He wrapped it in wet linen, bound it to my back with a strap of goat hide, and told me to walk slowly on the pass because the stones above Kato Vrysi came loose after rain. I was eleven. I thought he sent me because I was careless, and I resented every switchback of the first hour.

Halfway up, a mule came round the bend with a man shouting at it in Vlach. The path was too narrow for both of us. I flattened myself against the rock, held the jar out from my body the way my uncle had taught me, and felt the mule's flank brush my shoulder. The jar did not break. I stood there with my heart going like a trapped bird and laughed until the man asked whether I was mad.

At the top, where the wind comes through like a blade, I set the jar on a flat stone and unwrapped the linen. Kostas had scratched a line of letters into its neck before firing, the way potters sign their work, and I had never learned to read them. The old priest at the chapel read them for me once: a vessel chosen for carrying something. Not a cup for wine, he said, but a thing set aside for a purpose it never asked for.

I carried it down the far side with the water sloshing and not a drop lost. Kostas met me at the gate, looked at the jar, then at me, and said only, 'Still whole, then,' which from him was a sermon.
