Dance script lettering on the side of a foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot is raised so the sole and inner side face the camera, showing the word dance in flowing, joined script. The letters are outlined in black with soft grey shading inside, and the word runs diagonally up from the arch towards the heel. The background is a plain wall and a wooden surface, with even indoor lighting.

The frontier guards at Hollin Bridge had orders to search every cart, sack and bundle that came over the water during the flood year. Old Marta Reeve was waved through without a glance. Everyone knew she carried nothing but her fiddle and a bag of dried plums, and the sergeant was too courteous to make an old woman open her case in the rain.

What the sergeant did not know was that her grandson Piotr had been dancing since he could walk. His mother had inked a word along the side of his foot with a sewing needle and soot from the stove, so the guards would never think to search a boy's heel. Dance, she had told him. Dance and the road will keep its shape under you, and nobody will stop what moves that well.
When the sergeant finally asked the boy for his papers, Piotr did not reach for them. He stepped onto the loose planks of the bridge and began to tap out the tune his grandmother was playing. The guards stamped in time without meaning to. Their boots rang on the wood, the cart rolled forward on the beat, and the sergeant found himself tapping his own heel while the timber groaned under the rhythm. By the time he remembered his duty, the cart was already on the far bank.
At the river's edge Marta wiped her fiddle and counted the plums left in her bag. The soot on the boy's foot had rubbed to a faint grey smudge, and the sergeant, standing alone on the bridge, was still humming the tune under his breath.
