Comic-style fighter with playing card on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A male comic-style character in a long dark coat leans forward with one hand outstretched, a playing card flying past his head. Bold black outlines and smooth shading define the figure, while orange, red and yellow flames fill the background and surround the arm. The composition wraps around the upper arm, with the figure centred and the flames spreading outward to the edges.

He had come for the forty pounds Hetty Vane owed the company, and for the ledger that proved it. The ledger was under the bar, under three crates of gin, under a tin of boot blacking that Hetty swore was only boot blacking. Marrow had not come for the card. The card had come for him, flicked from the far side of the room by a man with a cough and a bad hat, and it had cut through the smoke as neatly as a surgeon's blade. The flames had leapt to meet it the way dogs go to a whistle.
Afterwards, on the cold quay with the ledger buttoned inside his coat, Marrow turned the card over. The ace had a scorch along one corner and a single hole punched through the spade. Someone had meant it as a warning. Someone had also, he suspected, meant it as a gift, because the hole sat exactly where the fire had not reached.
He laid the card face up on the wet stones, weighted it with a half brick, and walked on towards the tide, leaving the town to burn itself out and the ash to settle on his shoulders like snow.
