Wonder Woman in colour on a lower leg

Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows the superhero Wonder Woman mid-action, with a dark-haired figure in a tiara and metal bracelets, and a red and gold emblem across the torso. The rendering uses smooth blended shading, with strong reds, golds and blues against black and grey areas that frame the figure. The design wraps around the leg, with a gold lasso curving across the lower part of the composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gale took the top rail off the gallery and most of the gulls' nests with it, so when the gold rope came ashore on the shingle at Scarrow Head, I assumed it was rigging from some trawler lost off the Skerries. It was warm to the touch even soaked through, and it hummed faintly when I lifted it, like a kettle thinking about boiling.

Our parish is small enough that everyone knows who lies. Jack Penhallow had been telling the Harbour Board his dinghy went down in the squall, and the whole quay knew he'd sold it to a man from Newlyn for brandy. I took the rope up the cliff path that afternoon, looped it twice around his wrist in the net loft, and asked him where the dinghy really was. The rope went tight of its own accord. He wept, then talked for an hour, and I learned more about my neighbours than I had in thirty years of keeping the light.

Word got round. By the week's end half the village wanted a turn with it, and I found I had to be strict about who asked. The vicar wanted to know where his wife had hidden the sherry. The schoolmaster asked about a woman in Penzance and I said no. I kept the rope coiled on the lamp room sill where the beam could reach it, and I told nobody that what frightened me most was how easy it had been to ask questions I already knew the answers to.

On the last night of the month the fog came in thick as wool. I climbed up to light the lamp by hand, the big mechanism being stubborn, and found the rope lying in a neat gold ring on the sill, though I had not left it there. Out past the rocks a single light answered mine, low and steady, from a boat I could not see. I unwound the rope, and for the first time in years I did not want to know who was out there.
