Dreamcatcher with feathers and birds design

Black and grey · Flash

A detailed pen drawing of two stacked dreamcatchers, each with a woven web pattern, hung with feathers and beads. A cluster of small flowers sits at the top right, and a flock of birds drifts across the left side. The work is rendered in fine, dense linework with light shading on a plain white background, and it is monochrome throughout.

Dear Tom, the swifts have gone from the chimney over the chip shop, all at once the way they do, and I stood in the yard this morning counting the gaps in the sky where they used to be. Your nan's hoop is finished. I wove the lower one first, the way she taught me, starting from the centre and working out so the web doesn't pull crooked. The beads are the grey glass ones from the jar under the sink.

The feathers were the hard part. Mr Ferreira at the harbour gave me gull and a few crow flights from the bins behind the net shed, and I told him not to bother sorting them, I wanted them ragged. You'd have laughed at me stripping the quills with my teeth like a cat. Three hang from the bottom hoop and two from the top, and the top one has the little cluster of rowan berries Nan always tied on when you were small, because she said it kept the wind honest.

Yesterday a flock came in off the water and wheeled over the car park for ten minutes, hundreds of them, sliding through the web of the top hoop as if it wasn't there. I didn't move. Mrs Guthrie came out with her bread and said that's a sign of rain, and it rained by teatime, but I know what it was. They were only passing through, looking for the gap in the wire.

Come home for the weekend if you can. Bring the good scissors. The hoop's hanging by the back door, and I've left the middle thread loose so you can knot your own name into it before I shut the web for good. Love, Mam.
