Compass rose on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A compass rose with an eight-point star at the centre, long pointed arrows extending north and south, and a scalloped ornamental ring on one side. Fine lines and stippled dots build the detail, and a dotted circle frames the design. It is rendered in black ink only on pale skin, with a dark top and jeans visible at the edge of the frame.

The band at the Lantern Hall had given up on the waltz by ten, so the bandleader rapped his baton on the music stand and called for a quickstep nobody had asked for. I stood by the window with my father's brass compass in my palm, turning it until the needle settled against the glass. Outside, the pier lamps swung in the wind off the Channel. Inside, the floor was a loose sea of gingham and wool.

Tomas Kerr crossed it without hurrying. He had the look of a man who had spent six winters on coal boats and no longer trusted a room that stood still. "You're facing the wrong wall," he said, nodding at the compass. "North's through the kitchen door, and that's been locked since the war."

"My father said the needle never lies."

"Your father drew charts for a living. Charts lie all the time, that's the job." He held out his hand, and I took it, because the band had struck up again and because he was grinning at me as if I'd already agreed to something. We moved through the crowd in a rough square, past the Pearsons and their terrier, past the urn of stewed tea nobody would touch. Every turn he made, he glanced at the window and back at me, as though he were taking a bearing.

When the last song ended, I pulled free and walked to the door with the compass open in my hand. The needle swung, wobbled, and steadied towards the pier. Tomas came up beside me with his coat already on. "Well?" he asked. I snapped the lid shut and pushed the doors open onto the wet boards. "South," I said. "Or wherever it's pointing tonight."
