Compass rose tattoo with orange watercolour splash

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A compass rose sits at the centre of the image, with a fleur-de-lis above and the letters W and S around its points. The compass has fine black linework and shaded rings, filled with orange, yellow and brown ink. Loose orange watercolour washes spread behind the design, and a printed compass drawing sits in the top right corner.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The mapmaker of Veldmoor had lost three apprentices to the northern passes, so when Ilse came to the workshop with ink under her nails and a letter from her uncle, he set her to copying the old compass rose from the bottom of the chest. It was a brass-ringed thing, sun-coloured, with eight points that the damp had nearly eaten. Every morning she traced it again, and every morning the orange wash she had mixed from saffron and rust ran a little past the lines, the way it always did when she was tired.

On the ninth day the mapmaker came in from the rain and found her crying over a spoiled sheet. He did not comfort her. He took the sheet, held it to the lamp, and said the fleur-de-lis was facing the wrong way, and that the W had been drawn like a fish hook. Then he pointed at the splash of colour spreading behind her rose and said that was the only honest thing on the page. Anyone could draw a north. Only a person who had been lost in weather would think to let the ground bleed a little.

She finished the chart that week with the W and the S set where he said they belonged, and a fine dashed line running out from the centre like a thread someone had forgotten to pull in. When the first caravan of the thaw rode out, the captain asked who had made it. The mapmaker tapped the lower corner, where a small, careful signature sat beside the amber wash. Ilse, it read, and beneath it, in smaller hand, a single word: returned.
