Watercolour clock splash on a wrist

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A clock face with a black strap sits on the wrist, with Roman-style numerals and small star sparkles spilling into loose red, blue, purple and yellow paint drips. The linework is soft and the colour blends into the skin without hard outlines, while the black strap and dark shading give the piece some contrast. The photo shows two angles of the same forearm side by side against a plain, softly blurred background.

Dear Nell, the Harbour Street shop has finally gone quiet, so I can tell you what happened to Mr Aske's watch. Last Tuesday a fishwife brought in her husband's silver pocket watch on its black leather strap, the way he wore it at sea, and asked us to make it run again. We opened the back and found the mainspring snapped clean through. Mr Aske put on his spectacles, took one look and said, "Some things are only stopped, not broken."

He sent me to the cupboard for the paints his late wife used on the shop sign. I thought he had gone mad. He dipped a fine brush in cobalt, then in carmine, and flicked the colour across the dial so it ran over the glass like rain down a window. Then he drew the numerals back in, one by one, the IX and the VIII, with small stars pricked between them, until the face looked less like a timepiece and more like the sky had come apart over a harbour.

The fishwife cried when she saw it. She said her husband would have laughed. I stood at the bench with ink on my cuffs and felt, for the first time, that time was something you could spill and gather up again.

Mr Aske says the mainspring can wait until Monday. In four years I have never once heard a clock told it could wait. Come up at Easter and I will show you the dial myself. Yours, Tom
