Compass and arrows on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo on the inner forearm shows a compass star at the centre, with thin arrow lines radiating outwards and solid and outlined triangles and small dots around the hub. Stylised marks sit at the ends of the arrows, and the lines are fine and even with some small solid filled areas. The arm lies across green grass, with a silver bracelet visible at the top left of the frame.

The cairn at Bwlch Ddu has been kicked over again, most likely by the same sheep that have been stealing your flask, and you are the one who has to rebuild it before the fog comes off the ridge. Your father's brass compass sits in your coat pocket, its needle sticking a little on the north mark the way it always did. He used to say the arrows on the dial were there to remind you that every direction is also a choice.

The mist comes up the valley like milk poured into tea. You stack the stones and count them aloud, as he taught you, then scratch a mark in the chalk on the largest one: a triangle for the bothy, a dot for the spring, a small feather for the place where the ravens roost. Below you the path splits three ways. Two arrows point down into bog and rain. The third, the one with a clover knotted round its shaft, climbs over the saddle toward the old boundary wall.
A bell sounds somewhere below, then a dog, then a man calling a name that isn't yours. You answer with the whistle your father used, two notes falling, and wait with your hand on the cold stone. The voice comes back closer, and then a figure steps out of the grey carrying a lantern with a cracked glass, shoulders bowed under a rolled tent.
He stops at the cairn and looks at the chalk marks without speaking. You open the compass and hold it out to him. He reads the star, taps the needle once, and nods. Together you lift the last stone into place, and the mist thins just enough for both of you to see the saddle path running clear ahead.
