Compass and dreamcatcher arrow design

Geometric · Black and grey · Flash

A hand-drawn pen sketch on white paper shows a compass rose with the letters N, E, S and W at the cardinal points. A circle with looping inner lines sits at the centre, with a vertical arrow running through it and two feathers hanging below like a dreamcatcher. The linework is dark and uses hatched shading on the circle, arrow and feathers, with no colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The needle had stopped trusting north somewhere above the second cairn, and Tomas Gerrard stood in the lee of a boulder with the brass case open in his glove, waiting for it to decide. Sleet came sideways off Hollin Pass. Behind him the valley road was already gone, swallowed by cloud, and ahead there was only the stone gap and the wind pushing through it like a mill race.

Ruth had tied the two grey feathers to his satchel strap the morning he left Keld, her fingers red from the wash tub. "Something to show the wind which way you're bound," she'd said, and he had laughed at her. Now he worked one loose and held it up. It lay flat, then lifted, then leaned hard to the east, the way the snow was driving. He turned the dial until the arrow on the card matched the feather's slant.

The track beyond the gap had been drifted over for weeks, but the feather knew the line of the old wall even when he could not see it. He followed its lean down into the next valley, counting fenceposts by touch, until the cloud tore open over a farmhouse chimney smoking a thin blue line. Ruth would be at the window. He would not tell her the needle had failed him. He would tell her the wind had given him the better direction.
