Compass rose design in pencil

Black and grey · Flash

A pencil drawing of an ornate compass rose on plain white paper, with an eight-point star centred on a ring studded with small dots. A fleur-de-lis sits at the top point, and scrolled ornaments mark the south point, with the cardinal directions labelled N, E, S and W. The shading is fine cross-hatched graphite, giving the star points a sharp, dimensional look, and the design is centred with generous space around it.

The lift to the fourth floor has been stuck between two and three for twenty minutes, so you take the stairs with the bleep handset clipped to your tunic and a torch you don't need yet. Ward 4B is a long corridor with the lights dimmed to amber, and the night sister has left a note taped to the drugs trolley: bed nine is restless, bed fourteen wants water, and somebody has moved the sharps bin again.

Nobody on days believes the corridor bends. From the nurses' station the far doors look straight ahead, but the linen room sits at an angle that never made it onto the plans. Your father taught you the points of a compass on a Sunday beach, with a brass one from the glovebox whose needle never agreed with the road signs. You turn it over in your pocket now, the way other people check for keys. North is the door with the broken handle. East is the lift you cannot use.

Bed nine belongs to Mr Okafor, who is eighty-one and wants to know which way the sea is. You tell him the window faces east, which is true, and that the tide is out, which you cannot know. He laughs, then goes quiet, then says that a needle always points somewhere useful, even when it isn't where you meant to go. You fetch the water and sit with him until his breathing slows.

At six the sky over the car park turns the grey of pencil lead. You walk out through the north doors into the first light, the little brass compass still ticking against your keys.
