A neo-traditional compass rose with a red wash and the words Families are the compass that guide us, tattooed across a man's chest and shoulder.

Compass and family quote on chest

Neo-trad · Chest · Mixed · Photo

A black and grey compass rose with a light red wash sits on the upper chest, with the lettering Families are the compass that guide us set across the shoulder in typewriter-style block letters and a black brush stroke. The compass has shaded needles and a detailed outer ring, while loose red and black splashes add a painterly, sketchy effect. The photograph is taken close up and in natural light, with the subject's jaw cropped at the top of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had sealed the pass for three days when Mabel Crane barred the inn door against the wind and counted the lamps. Seven guests, one cook, and her father in the cellar with the last barrel of cider. Out on the moor road, a carter named Tobias Greave was still driving his two mules toward the light, and the whole village knew it.

Her grandmother had kept a brass compass on the mantel, its glass cracked across the N, and she used to say a house without a needle in it was only a box of strangers. Mabel took it down and held it flat on her palm. The needle swung, shivered, and settled toward the window. "He's north-east of the stone bridge," she said. "Keep the fire high and the bell ringing."

They rang the bell until the rope blistered her hands. Her father came up from the cellar with frost in his beard and stood at the foot of the stairs while she turned the compass and walked the room like a sailor on a tilting deck. Each time the needle drifted, she moved toward the bell, and each time it steadied she called out the bearing. Near midnight a lantern showed through the drift, then another, then a mule's grey shape stamping out of the white.

Tobias came in with ice on his coat and asked whose needle had brought him home. Mabel said it was her grandmother's, her father said it had been his mother's before that, and the carter laughed and said the snow had never fooled a family who knew where they stood. She hung the compass back on the mantel, cracked glass and all, and the needle kept pointing at the door.
