Daisy tattoo on the thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A single daisy or gerbera flower is tattooed on the outer thigh, with its petals curving across the skin. The petals are drawn in fine black outlines with light grey shading, and the centre is filled with dense stippled grey texture. The photograph is taken at an angle, with the leg filling most of the frame against a teal wall and a dark garment at the lower edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, sit down, the stones are warm and the goat won't bite if you keep your hands to yourself. You want the story of the road to Hallen Wells? Then listen, because I only tell it once a season. The rain came the spring my brother Tobias was driving the water lorry, and it came sideways, as if it had a grudge against the Tarrant ridge.

Somewhere past the twelfth milepost, where the tarmac gives up and turns to pale gravel, he saw a flower standing alone in the wheel rut. Not a poppy, not the yellow weed the sheep won't touch. A gerbera, the size of a dinner plate, its petals lying back flat against the wind as though someone had combed them. He stopped the lorry and got out. He said afterwards that the petals were drawn in with a pencil so fine you could see the little grey veins, and the middle was dark and thick as a thumbprint of ash.

Nobody believed him at the Wells. The old women said the desert keeps its own counsel and does not make pictures. So he went back the next morning with a jar of water and a bent spoon, and he found the flower had turned to face the road, the way a passenger turns to see who is coming up behind.

He never picked it. Every spring since, whoever drives that stretch stops at the twelfth milepost, sets down a single pail of water, and waits a while. Ask him why and he'll say the road only keeps the ones it has been shown to. Drink your tea. The bus is late, and that's the other story.
