Compass rose tattoo in dark blue ink
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
A compass rose sits centrally on a bare limb, with an eight-pointed star whose inner ring has a detailed, lattice-like pattern. The letters N, E, S and W mark the cardinal points in a decorative serif style. The ink is a single dark blue-black tone with solid fills and fine internal linework, set against pale skin and dark clothing at the edge of the frame.

The monitor above bed four had been chirping for ten minutes before Ruth mentioned it, and by then I had walked Ward 9 twice looking for the second cannula trolley. Night shift ran on small errands like that. If you didn't know where things lived after the lights dropped, you asked Mr Okafor, who had worked nights for nineteen years and kept his bearings in a battered notebook with a compass rose inked on the cover.

Ruth had moved the trolley herself at midnight, because the sluice light flickered and she hadn't wanted to walk past it alone. I didn't raise my voice. Shouting at three in the morning only drives people further into hiding. Instead I sat on the edge of the sink and asked how she would find the car park if she'd only ever seen it by daylight. She said she'd look for the lamps. I said the lamps all faced the main road, the main road ran to the sea, and the sea stayed put.
Okafor had told me that on my first week, tapping the rose with his pen. 'North is the only point you need to believe in,' he said. 'The other three are just arithmetic.' I had laughed then. The letters were fussy, the N curled like a ribbon, the W almost lost where he'd pressed too hard. Now I used his drawing as I walked the corridor, and the smell of antiseptic and the hum of the fridges resolved into a shape I could trust.
We found the trolley behind the linen store, Ruth's note taped to the handle: Sorry, in careful round capitals. Bed four had gone quiet; Okafor had already silenced it. When I got back he slid his notebook across the desk, open at the compass. 'Which way is the window?' he asked. I pointed. He nodded and turned the page.
