Geometric mandala on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large mandala-style design covers the inner forearm, with a radiating flower at the top and a faceted geometric star below. The linework is fine and dark, with stippled dotwork shading that adds texture to the petals and the star. The design is in black ink only and fills the frame against a plain, softly lit background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The frost had not lifted off the yard by seven, and Hannah was already at the kitchen table with the seed ledger open, pencil bitten flat at one end. Her uncle's handwriting ran down the margins in columns that never quite agreed with the bank. Outside, the tractor ticked as it cooled in the shed, and the radio said the lane to Market Rasen was closed again.

She found the drawing in the bottom drawer, tucked between feed receipts and a tin of loose buttons. It was on squared paper: a sunflower head ringed with petals, each one ruled with a compass and then shaded in hundreds of tiny dots, like a field after rain. Below it sat a faceted star on a grid of triangles, twelve points drawn so carefully the pencil had nearly gone through at the centre. Across the top, in blocky capitals, he had written: FOR THE ROW BY THE GATE, NOT THE ACCOUNTS.

The row by the gate had been empty for three years. The sunflowers had gone to the rooks, and the seed merchant had stopped answering letters. Hannah did the sum her uncle would have done, the one with no column for pleasure, and found the money would not stretch. Then she filled the kettle and saw that the window above the sink had grown a pattern overnight: a flower opening from the corner, its petals splitting into smaller petals, with ice dots pricked between them.

She laid the drawing beside the glass and matched the rings with one finger. Then she turned the seed catalogue to the page of sunflowers, dog-eared since 2019, and wrote on the back of the bank letter: Russian Giant, twelve packets, row by the gate. The frost would melt by ten. The accounts could wait until March, and so could she.
