Skull and guitar neck on upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A skull is set against an angular, abstract background, with a red and blue guitar neck running diagonally above it. Bold black linework and sketchy strokes sit over soft shading and loose splashes of yellow, orange and blue. The design fills most of the upper arm and is framed by a dark sleeve and a blurred room in the background.

The neck came off the last working amplifier on Corrin Reach the week the sea took the lower terraces, and you are the one who carries it up the hill to the foundry because nobody else will touch anything that still hums. The foundry smells of solder and wet slate. Old Mireille, who has not been off the ridge in nine years, takes one look at the red headstock and says the tuners are still good, which is her way of saying you were right to bring it.

She wants the skull cast from the fused sensor casing you pulled from the drowned harbour, grey and pitted, its eye sockets full of blue glass. You spend three nights grinding its jaw so it can open and close on a hinge, the way the old drummers used to tell their crews to keep time. Mireille refuses to pay you in ration chits. She gives you a paint pot instead, the last yellow and orange anyone made before the kilns cooled, and you flick it across the brass with a brush made from your own hair. Nobody on the ridge has ever seen colour that loud.

When the piece is finished you hang it over the door, neck angled up toward the sky like a flag. Ships still come in from the south, and the sailors stop to stare at it, then at you. The strings are gone, but the skull keeps its grin, and every storm that rattles the shutters, it seems to sing a little louder.
