Black and grey realism tattoo of a compass, rolled map and candle with a small red wax seal on a forearm.

Compass and old map on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A large compass sits at the centre of a forearm piece, surrounded by a weathered, folded map with faint landmass outlines. A candle sits at the upper left and a small red wax seal appears on the lower part of the paper. The shading is smooth and highly detailed, with soft greys giving the paper and metal a three-dimensional look, and the red seal is the only colour accent.

You find the map wedged behind the loose board of the potting shed, the paper gone soft as cloth where damp has crept into its folds. Someone has drawn the walls of this very garden on it, a neat square of paths, and beyond the hedge a coastline you do not recognise. The compass in the corner points north with the confidence of a thing that has never been wrong about anything except the place.

Your grandmother's hand is in the margins, small and slanting. She never mentioned the surveyor who came in the spring of 1951 to settle the boundary with the Harrow farm, or that he left his instruments in the cold frame and never came back for them. A candle stub on the window ledge has burned down to a pool of wax, and the seal on the letter folded inside still holds, a blot of red with a gate pressed into it.

You break it with your thumbnail. The letter is only three lines: Measure from the sundial, not the wall. Trust the south bed. Do not let Harrow plant the beeches. Below, in fainter ink, someone has added: It was never the wall that moved.

You walk out to the sundial in the dusk, counting paces the way the map instructs, and the bed under your boots gives like a held breath. The trowel strikes something hollow. Under the turf, a tin box rattles, and you realise the compass has been pointing at your feet all along.
