Stippled rose with buds inside a dotted circle
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A stippled drawing of an open rose with two closed buds and several leaves, all on a single stem that splits near the base. The rose and leaves are built from dense dots and fine outlines in black ink, giving soft shading without any solid colour. The design sits inside a loose circle of evenly spaced dots, and a black fineliner rests on the right side of the page.

Marigold Teague had been counting dots since the ferry left, because counting kept her hands from shaking. On the kitchen table of the rented cottage on Inish Corra, the fineliner lay where she had dropped it, its cap lost somewhere under the dresser. The rose on the paper was nearly finished. Every petal was a field of small black points, and she had learned that the shadows came from patience rather than pressure.

Her brother Owen had kept the bees on the far slope until the winter he did not wake. He left her a biscuit tin of letters, most of them about weather, and one folded sheet in pencil asking her to draw the rose that grew against the chapel wall before the salt got into its roots. She walked there at dawn with the page in a plastic sleeve. The bush was half dead, but one stem still carried a closed bud, tight as a fist, and two leaves gone glossy with rain.
She drew the flower inside a ring of dots because Owen always said a thing needed a boundary before anyone would believe it. The circle took her an afternoon. Each point had to sit the same distance from the last, and when the spacing finally came right, the whole page seemed to hum quietly, the way the hives used to. Hannah from the post office came round at four with milk and stood at the table for a long time without speaking.
"That's his rose," Hannah said. Marigold nodded and pushed the sheet across. Outside, the tide turned against the chapel wall where the bush still grew, and for the first time in weeks she did not look up at the window to see whether anyone was coming up the path.
