Compass and world map forearm tattoo
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The left panel shows a detailed pocket compass with a rope coil beneath it, set against a soft, shaded map background. The right panel shows a bold black compass rose and fine grid lines over an outline of continents, with shaded edges that fade into the skin. The work is entirely in black ink and greys, with smooth gradients and careful highlights on the metal and rope.

Mrs Tennant kept the boarding house at the top of Gull Steps, and she kept one room locked. The lodgers who came in September were tradesmen and widowers and a girl from Hull who painted gulls, and they all knew the key hung on a nail behind the scullery door and that the nail was not to be touched.

The compass came in a tin box with a coil of tarred rope and a map folded so often it had gone soft as cloth. Her husband had carried them home from the Baltic the winter before he went down with the Mary Ann. The box had sat on the sill of that room ever since, and nobody had opened it.
One October night the wind backed to the north and the sea climbed the steps as far as the chapel gate. Mrs Tennant took a candle up to the locked room. The needle was not pointing north. It had swung east and held there, steady as a bell rope, and when she tilted the glass the face was furred with salt.
She tied the compass to her wrist the way he used to, tucked the map under her arm, and went down into the wet dark. At the harbour wall a rowing boat knocked against the stones with nobody in it, its painter cut clean, and on the thwart lay a second compass, face up, its needle trembling toward the house on the hill. She rowed out until the lights of Gull Steps were small as pins. Then she turned the boat about, and both needles swung round with her, and for the first time in a year she knew exactly which way was home.
