Black and grey realism tattoo on a forearm showing a detailed compass with Roman numerals above a shaded palm tree beach sunset.

Compass and palm trees on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large compass with a Roman numeral dial and a pointer sits at the top of the design, with palm tree silhouettes and a shaded horizon below it. The linework is fine and the shading is smooth, with strong contrast in the palm fronds and soft grey gradients in the sky and sand. The tattoo fills most of the forearm, and the composition runs from the compass down to the palms along the arm.

The brass compass had been my uncle Tomas's, and he swore it had crossed the Col de Vautrel forty times before anyone built a road over it. He never let me hold it without a warning about the cold. So when the mule balked on the scree and the light went grey, I took it from my coat and watched the needle shiver, looking for something to trust.

The fog came up the western face like poured milk. Ilse, our guide, would not stop, and she would not talk either, only tapped the Roman numerals on the dial when I asked which way. Twelve was north, she said, and north was wrong. The path dropped west into the valley, where the refuge lamp would be burning if anyone had remembered to light it. I could not see my own boots.

Tomas used to say a compass is only a promise that the world has a shape. I had laughed at that over his kitchen table, with the radio playing and his tea going cold. Now I held the needle steady, let the fog wash over my knuckles, and walked where the pointer was not quite pointing. Twenty minutes later the stones gave way to turf, and the turf to a wooden gate, and beyond it a smudge of yellow light.

Pinned inside the refuge door was a postcard of a beach, palms bent by a steady wind, the sun sinking into a sea of ink. On the back, in Tomas's square hand, were four words: Keep the sun behind you. I stood dripping in the doorway and understood he had never been talking about the sea at all.
