Compass, fern, mountains and rose on arm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A compass rose with arrow points and the letters PNW sits at the centre of the design, with a fern frond above and a line-drawn rose and mountain peaks below. The linework is fine and precise, with light stippled shading on the mountains and rose petals. The tattoo is in black ink and grey tones and is framed in a plain light background.

Mother Hesketh always said the needle never lies, only the people who read it. That was the spring the ferries stopped running out of Port Angeles, and Maud Varley, who was nine, set off up the logging road with her father's brass compass in her coat pocket and a loaf wrapped in a tea towel.

The road climbed through fern as high as her shoulders. At every fork she turned the compass until the N sat true, then took whichever way the arrow pointed, which was not always the way the road went. Twice she lost the path under bramble. Once she sat on a stump and cried, and a grey fox watched her from the edge of the clearing until she stopped.
On the third morning the mountains came up out of the cloud like the teeth of an old saw. The needle swung wild near the peaks, so Maud set the compass on a flat rock and waited. It settled. She followed the arrow down the far side, past a wild rose gone to hips, until she reached a hut with a red door where her father was splitting kindling in the yard as though he had never left.
He took the loaf and asked what the needle had told her. She said it had shown her the way home. He said it had only shown her north, and the rest she had walked herself. She kept the compass all her life and never once trusted it without looking up first.
