Shaded moon with geometric linework on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded crescent-phase moon sits at the top of a forearm, with craters rendered in stippled dots. Below and across it, fine circles, straight lines and a dotted triangle form a geometric construction. The image is in black and grey, with a plain pale background and a dark top behind the arm.

Forty years after they left the schoolhouse at Marrow Dean, the old class met again in the same hall, and Hannah Pell still had the brass compass her father had given her for the Michaelmas examination. Nobody had asked her to bring it. She took it out during the speeches because the lamp over the stage kept swinging, and she wanted to know whether the building was moving or the moon was.

Her grandmother's story was that the moon at Marrow Dean had once been a plain round thing, a cheese on a shelf, until a surveyor's girl drew its shape on a slate with a length of string and a nail. Every line she drew pinned the moon a little more in place. Circles for the orbits, straight rules for the paths between the village wells, a triangle for the three hills visible from the church tower. The moon, the old women said, did not care to be measured, and each time someone took a true reading of it, a crater shifted in the night.
At the reunion, Hannah laid the compass on the trestle table and drew the same construction on a paper napkin, pricking the craters in with the point of a pencil. The hall went quiet the way it used to when the master counted to ten. Outside, the sky had turned the colour of slate, and above the car park a pale crescent hung exactly where her lines said it should.
Tom Ashby, who had once sat behind her and copied every sum, leaned across, took the pencil from her fingers and added one small dot at the edge of the largest circle. Above the car park, the moon turned a fraction on its axis. Nobody in the hall mentioned it, and Hannah folded the napkin into her coat pocket, where it stayed until morning.
