The mine at Scarrow Hollow had eleven levels and no two maps agreed with each other. Everyone in the village knew the rule about the compass. Underground the needle lies, because the rock is full of iron and iron misleads anyone who trusts it. So the old captains painted a rose on the lamp-room door and taught every new boy to find his way by the points, not the needle.

In the hungry winter the water came up the Dunmere shaft faster than the pumps could clear it. Jory Trewhella, who was twelve and too proud to say he was frightened, went down the ladder to fetch his father's tally-stick from the eighth level. The water rose behind him. His lamp guttered out at the ninth rung. He stood in a dark so complete that he could hear his own pulse against the wet stone, and he held his brass compass in his palm and understood it was no use to him at all.

He remembered the door. He remembered the star with its eight long points, and the ring of ticks around it that his grandmother said were the rungs of heaven. He stopped trying to make the needle settle. Instead he counted the ticks in his head, one for each stride along the drift, and kept the thin white gap between two points on his left hand, the way old Penhale had shown him, until the air changed and he smelt bread from the bakehouse chimney above the engine house.

They found him at dawn sitting on the bottom rung with the compass still shut in his fist. When they asked how he had found the way, he said the needle had lied, as it always did, and he had simply trusted the star. Penhale, who had painted that rose forty years before, said nothing. He went to the lamp room and fetched a fresh tin of black paint, and he went over the points again, deeper, so the next boy would not have to guess.
