A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fair came up the valley road every September with three caravans and a cart of ropes. Old Mabel Quaid ran the rope stall at the far end of the field, where a boy could pay a penny to try the knot that held a horse, and nobody ever managed it first time.

One year a lad called Tomas Dunn came with a wager from the forge boys. He said any knot could be picked open by clever hands. Mabel handed him a length of tarred cord and told him to take three turns, go over, go under, go over, then bring the end back through the first loop. He tried until the lamps were lit. Each time the cord slid open in his fingers, and each time she said the same thing: the knot does not care how quick you are.

At dusk he sat on the step with the cord across his knees and looked at it properly. Three loops, each passing under one neighbour and over the other, so that none could slip free without the rest giving way. He wrapped it round his wrist three times and pulled. It held. When he looked up, Mabel was already folding her awning, her back to him, humming a tune with no words.

In the morning the field was bare except for ruts and the stink of spent coal. A single length of tarred cord hung on the gatepost, knotted in three neat loops. Tomas left it where it was, and when the forge boys asked him whether he had won his wager, he only held up his wrist and showed them the mark the cord had left there.
