Dotwork mandala with spirals and petals

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

A circular mandala drawn in black ink on white paper, built from radiating teardrop petals, concentric rings of dots and circles, and repeated spiral scrolls. The linework is fine and precise, with stippled dotwork shading that gives the petals and background depth. The design is symmetrical and fills the square frame evenly, with no colour present.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Dorrance wanted the floor done before the Thursday tea dance, and he wanted it done with a compass, not a chalk line, because he said chalk lied after the second waltz. So I knelt on the boards of the Pavilion Ballroom in Hollin Bay with a pin, a pencil and a tin of white ink, and I drew the circle first, then the ring of dots, one dot for every heel that would land there.

The petals took the afternoon. Sixteen of them, teardrops pointing out toward the skirting, each with a spiral curled inside like a fern not yet opened. Mrs Ackroyd brought me tea in a cup with a chip in the rim and watched me stipple the shadow of each petal with the tip of a nib, dot after dot, until my wrist ached and the pattern began to look less like something I had drawn and more like something the floor had been waiting to show.

On Thursday the dancers came. Nobody looked down. They turned in their slow rings, following the spirals without knowing they were following anything, and the centre rose and fell under their feet. Only the old caller, Arthur, stood at the edge with his hat in his hands and read the ink like a letter.

When the hall emptied I knelt again and found my dots worn to pale grey where the men had pivoted, the spirals smudged into the grain. I left them that way. Some patterns are only meant to be danced off, so the next Thursday I started the circle again from the centre, where the pin had gone in.
