A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wind had sat in the north for nine days, and Ada found Tomas on the harbour wall with his father's compass open on his knee, tapping the glass as if it owed him money. The wedding was due at dusk. The cake was already at the Mackays' under a tea towel, and half the village was pretending not to watch the lane.

"It won't settle," he said. "The needle wanders about like it's looking for someone."

Ada sat beside him and took the compass from his hands. The card inside was worn to a grey halo, and the letters round the rim had faded so that only the N still stood up clear. Her grandmother had told her a story about that compass when Ada was small and cross. A man who sails with a true card comes home. A man who sails with a false one comes home only in his dreams, and the feathers hanging from the foot were there to keep those dreams gentle.

"Your gran never said which kind I was," Tomas said.

"She said you'd know when you looked north and found nothing but my face." Two grey herons stood in the shallows below them. As the light lowered, one lifted and drifted over the water, and a feather slid loose from its wing and fell to the wall between them. Ada picked it up and held the compass flat. The needle swung once and stopped, true as a nail, pointing straight back up the lane toward the chapel bell.
