Compass rose on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small compass rose sits centrally on the inner wrist, with a long vertical needle and horizontal needle crossing at the centre and smaller diagonal points. The lettering N, E, S and W marks the cardinal directions, and the lines are thin and dark black. The patterned map paper behind the arm adds colour to the background, while the tattoo itself is entirely black and grey.

The rain came sideways off the estuary, and Marguerite Bell pinned the chart flat with two cups of cold tea before it could fly. Her son had drawn the compass rose in the corner of every page since he was six, the needle pointing north, the letters in careful capitals, and she had never once told him the N was backwards. Today the paper was soft as bread. The ink had bled into the coastline of Portugal until it looked like a bruise.

She took the old brass dividers from the drawer and walked the distance from the harbour wall to the lighthouse, counting under her breath. Forty-one paces. The market stalls along the quay were shuttered except for the fishmonger, whose awning dripped like a wet dog, and a man selling secondhand charts from a barrow. He had a stack of them weighted with river stones. She bought three without haggling, which surprised them both.
Back at the boat she spread the best one across the cabin table and read it the way her husband used to, with a finger on the rose. East was where the sun went when you were too tired to follow it. South was the warm end of the page. She found the small pencilled cross he had left years ago, near the Scilly Isles, and beside it a single word in his cramped hand: wait.
She took out a pen, drew a line from the centre of the rose straight down to the margin, and wrote the date beneath it. Outside, the rain thinned and the gulls came back to the wall. She was not lost. She had only been standing still long enough to remember which way was home.
