The Salt Road ran forty miles without water, and the carters who used it counted their barrels the way a priest counts beads. Hal Corrin had one barrel left and a mule gone lame when he came to the dry well at Tenner's Cross, where the wind had worn the gravestone so smooth nobody could read it.

He let the mules nose at the rim and lowered the bucket anyway, because a man does. It came up with sand in it and one small fish, silver as a coin, flapping in a puddle no bigger than a hat. Hal had seen fish in a river but never out here. He told it so, and the fish seemed to think him a fool, which he took for an answer.

He could have eaten it. Instead he carried it in his cap to the far side of the flats, where a woman named Sefa kept a stall of dates and goat cheese. She laughed at him until he showed her the marks the fish had left on his palm, a curve with a line drawn through it. Sefa stopped laughing. Two wells, she said, had been dug by people who cut that sign into their stones. Put the fish back where the sign points, and the road will give you water on the way home.

Hal went back the way he had come. At Tenner's Cross he tipped the fish into the mouth of the well and waited. By morning the water stood a hand deep, cold and clear, and the mule drank first. Hal filled his barrel, and when he looked down he saw the fish turning slow circles, as if it had only been waiting for someone to ask.
