Cross and fish on a wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a hand with its fingers curled, showing a small tattoo on the inner wrist. The tattoo combines an upright cross with an ichthys fish outline, both in solid black lines with slightly rough edges. The background is dark and the image is softly vignetted, which keeps the focus on the wrist and hand.

Dear Nell,

The rain has been at Leeds all night and the paint won't cure in it, so I've been sitting in the van with the heater ticking and the wipers going. You'll laugh, but I finally finished the Hollins Street job. The chapel's old fish-and-cross sign had worn so badly the bottom curve of the fish had gone to nothing, and the vicar wanted it done "as it was". I had no pattern, only a photograph Mrs Dacre took in 1961 with her Brownie, and a lot of squinting.
I cut the stencil from card at the kitchen table, then drew the cross first, upright and a touch heavy at the foot, the way the old one sat. The fish I did freehand. Its line wobbles where the brush dragged, and I left it wobbling. Nobody reads a sign in the dark anyway. They only see the shape of it against the streetlamp.
At two this morning a lad came past with a carrier bag and stopped under the lamp to look up. He traced the fish in the air with one finger, not quite touching the glass, then walked on towards the bus shelter. I wanted to tell him it was only paint, but I think he already knew that.
Still pouring. Come up at Easter and I'll show you the door.
Love, Tom
