Small cross tattoo on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black Latin-style cross sits on the inner wrist, with its upper arms and stem drawn in thin, even black lines. A small heart-shaped outline appears where the crossbar meets the upright, and the ink has slightly soft, uneven edges. The image is a close, warmly lit shot against a striped fabric background, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The well at Coldharbour had gone dry the summer the old satellites fell, and the people up top stopped asking what they had done to deserve it. Mara Vell was sent down the shaft with a coil of cable, a headlamp that flickered when it felt like it, and her grandmother's instruction, which was to keep her left hand on the wall and never let go of it.

The wall was marked. Every forty paces someone had cut a cross into the rock, a thin upright with two short arms, and where the arms met the stem they had scratched a small heart so the marks would not be mistaken for the cracks that killed men. Her grandmother said the miners had done it in the first years of the drought, when the dark was thick and nobody trusted their own feet. Mara ran her thumb along each line the way you might count beads, though nobody in Coldharbour had prayed in her hearing for a generation.

At the ninth cross the lamp died. She sat in the cold with her back against the stone and listened to water far below, moving the way water moves when it has somewhere to go. Her hand found the heart by feel. The edges were worn soft by a hundred years of fingers, and she understood that the miners had not carved them to show the way down. They had carved them so that whoever came next would know someone had been there and had kept going.

She relit the lamp from the cell in her pocket, tied the cable to the ninth cross, and went down toward the sound. When she reached the water she filled a cup, drank, and cut a small new heart beside the old one with the knife on her belt. Then she climbed back up the rope, hand over hand, and told the village the well was still there.
