Compass rose over a map on the upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A large tattoo of an old-style map covers the upper arm and shoulder area, showing coastlines, hatched landmasses and faint lettering. A detailed compass rose sits to the right, with its eight points shaded in blue and grey. The linework is fine and the shading is soft, giving the map a worn, realistic look against the pale background.

Dearest Nell,

The wedding is still two weeks off, but the vicar has already lost our banns twice and Mother has taken to measuring the hall with a length of string, so I am writing from the window seat where I can see the lane. Forgive the smudge. I have been at Father's drawers all morning, and the ink has got everywhere.
Among his things I found the chart he never finished, the one of the Solent he began the spring you left for Bristol. The coastline is all there, hatched in pencil, with the little church towers marked where the sea has since taken them. In the corner he had drawn a compass rose with eight points. He had shaded the four main ones in blue wash and the rest in grey, as though he could not decide which way was true. Beneath it, in his cramped hand, he had written: "Mind the shoal off Calshot. Blue for the land, grey for the weather."
I have decided to bring it to the wedding and pin it above the table where Tom's uncle will sit, because Father would have hated to be left out of the speeches. Tom says it is a strange gift to give a man who spent his life measuring things that will not stay still. I told him that was exactly the point.
Write back soon and tell me whether you will come up on the Thursday train. I shall keep the blue ink for the place cards.
Yours in haste, Margaret
