World map and compass rose on upper arm

Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a world map with continents outlined in fine black lines, including Africa and part of Europe, with dashed meridian and latitude lines across the skin. A detailed eight-point compass rose sits on the right, drawn with dark linework and a circular bezel. Brown wash shading behind the continents and compass gives the piece a sepia, aged-map look against the skin.

Tobias Wren had rubbed the Cape out twice before the boy from the Custom House came up the stairs with the second dispatch, and by then the ink had dried into the creases of his knuckles like a second coastline. The Admiralty wanted the west coast of Africa fixed by Michaelmas. They did not wish to hear that the chart they had sent him was copied from a copy, drawn by a Dutchman who had never been south of the Canaries.

He worked with the window open so the tallow lamp would not smoke his paper. The compass rose went down first, eight points drawn with a steel nib, the north spike longer than the rest so no clerk could mistake it. Then the meridians, dashed, because a solid line would have claimed more certainty than he possessed. Mrs Achterberg brought his tea up at noon and set it down without looking at the table. "You've put the water on the wrong side," she said. "Sailors don't read maps for the land. They read them for what lies between."

He did not believe her until he unfolded the dispatch again and saw the margin note in the boy's careless hand: a schooner, the Hester Vane, last reported off a river mouth no chart had named. Tobias went back to the Dutch sheet and found the river, faint as a vein under the wash. He shaded the brown around it until the coast looked handled by many thumbs, then wrote the name he had been given, and beneath it a small W, because he had no better letter for the place.

When the fair copy went down to London the needle sat well east of the Admiralty's own north, and nobody asked why. Tobias kept the rough draft. On wet evenings he laid it on the table and traced the dashed lines with his thumb, following them off the edge of the paper and into the grain of the wood, where the ship had been heading all along.
