Compass rose tattoo close-up
Colour · Photo
A close-up of a compass rose tattoo with long yellow and orange star points radiating from a central white flower. A curved black line runs across the lower part of the design, with a small fleur-de-lis ornament hanging from it. The linework is clean and defined, with soft shading on the star points and warm, even lighting across the skin.

The fair has packed its dodgems and gone south by the time you find the compass, wedged under the caravan step where the rain pools. It is brass, the glass cracked across the rose, and the needle still trembles as if it has not yet decided which way home is. Your uncle Ezra always said a showman should never trust a map he hasn't walked, so you carry it up to the field's far gate and watch the dawn come up behind the hedge.

Inside the lid someone has scratched a tiny fleur-de-lis beneath the hinge, the same little lily that hangs from the line on the chart in the wagon, the one with the ring of pencilled towns. Every stop on the circuit is marked with a cross. Three crosses are inked in a different hand, and the last one sits in a village called Wren's Hollow, which does not appear in any road atlas you own.
You take the compass there on the Tuesday, following the star points like spokes of a sun through a flat grey county. The lane ends at a churchyard where a wooden carousel horse lies rotting under nettles, its gold paint worn to the grain, its mane still bright. A woman with flour on her hands is waiting by the wall, as though the fair had been expected for years and had never once arrived.
She holds out her palm. You open the lid and tip the compass into it, and the needle finally settles, pointing straight past you at the sunrise you have just walked out of. 'He never could read a wind,' she says, and goes back inside without another word, leaving the gate swinging open behind you.
